Why PixiSafe exists

A story, and a standard.

M
Hi, I'm Mathieu.

I created PixiSafe with one simple idea: letting everyone keep their memories safe. Seeing families around me lose their photos and videos when changing phones or running into a problem, I wanted to offer a simple, accessible solution.

Backing up your memories has become complicated: accounts to create, endless subscriptions, cables, software, settings… So we put it off — until the day it's too late.

I wanted a solution I could recommend without hesitation to my own parents, my friends, my family: simple, reliable, no forced cloud, no subscription, within everyone's reach. Plug in, tap, it's backed up.

And a backup is only worth something if you can actually use it. On the key, your photos and videos are sorted by year and month: plug it into a PC or a Mac and everything opens straight away, with no software to install and no password to remember. Enough to look back on a family summer, copy part of it, or simply check that it is all there.

And if one day you lose your phone, it breaks, or you replace it, the app puts everything back: it copies your memories from the key to the new device, skipping whatever is already on it. That day is exactly why you back up.

Today, everything is ready: the key, and our iPhone and Android apps, now available on the App Store and Google Play.

Thank you for your trust.

Your memories deserve to be backed up.

Capacity guide

Which capacity should you choose?

Not sure which capacity? Here's a simple guide based on your memories.

128 GB
For the essentials

≈ 25,000 photos, or 25 hours of HD video.

256 GB
For families

≈ 50,000 photos, or 50 hours of HD video.

Most popular
512 GB
For creators, travelers and photographers

≈ 100,000 photos, or 100 hours of HD video.

Choose precisely: check your real storage

Look at how much space your photos and videos already use on your phone:

  • iPhoneSettings → General → iPhone Storage → “Photos”
  • AndroidSettings → Storage → “Images” and “Videos”

Tip: pick the capacity just above to keep room for your future memories.

The PixiSafe app

Centralise everything.
Back up everything.

The PixiSafe key works with its companion app, available on the App Store (iPhone, iOS 17+) or Google Play (Android). It backs up, organises and restores your files with ease.

  • Incremental backup — never copies the same file twice
  • Automatic sorting by year, month and type (YYYY/MM/Photos)
  • Restore media from the key back to the phone
  • Several keys managed (iOS) — when one key is full, the next takes over
  • Works with no internet, no account, no cloud
Take back control

Keep control
of your data.

More and more people refuse to depend on cloud subscriptions, limited storage and external servers.

No more "storage full"

Free up space
on your phone.

Photos, 4K videos, WhatsApp, holiday memories… Your storage fills up fast.

Once your files are backed up on the key, you can free up space with peace of mind: your memories are already safe.

Reminder: before deleting a photo or video from your phone, check that it is safely on the key. And always keep your memories in two places — for example on the key and on your PC/Mac.

Before
Phone full

Full storage, slow apps, no room for new photos and videos.

After
Phone freed up

Your photos and videos are safe on the key — you can free up space with peace of mind.

Your questions, our answers

Frequently asked questions.

Compatibility

Is it compatible with iPhone?
Yes. The PixiSafe app works on iPhone with iOS 17 or later. The key plugs directly into USB-C iPhones (iPhone 15 and later); for iPhones with a Lightning port (iPhone 14 and earlier), a Lightning adapter is offered as an option at checkout.
Is it compatible with Android?
Yes, most recent Android smartphones are compatible (USB OTG connection).
Can I plug the key into a PC or a Mac?
Yes, directly and with no adapter. The PixiSafe key has dual connectors: a USB-C end (phones and recent computers) and a classic USB-A end (the rectangular port found on most PCs and Macs). Your photos and videos then open directly in the file explorer, with no software to install.
Can I view the photos and videos on a Windows computer?
Yes. The photos and videos backed up on your PixiSafe key can be viewed on a Windows computer. For photos in HEIC format, Windows may require the HEVC extension from the Microsoft Store. That extension usually costs €0.99 and then lets Windows display your HEIC photos directly. PixiSafe charges you no subscription and no additional fee.
Can I view the photos and videos on an Apple computer?
Yes, with nothing to install. macOS reads the iPhone's formats natively — HEIC for photos, HEVC for videos: plug the key in, open the folder, that's it. Your photos open in Preview, your videos in QuickTime, and everything stays sorted by year and month. Unlike on Windows, there is no extension to buy.

Everyday use

Is it easy to use?
Yes. The app is designed to be simple and intuitive, whatever your level with technology.
Can I back up videos?
Yes, both photos and videos are supported.
On iPhone, can I back up a specific album from my gallery?
Yes — and it's even simpler than on Android. iPhone lets apps access your albums from the Photos app directly, including the ones you created yourself. In PixiSafe, the “Albums” filter lets you choose exactly what to back up: Recents, Favourites, or your personal albums. And if some photos are kept only in iCloud (“Optimise storage”), no worries: PixiSafe fetches the full-quality original automatically — just keep Wi-Fi on.
On Android, can I back up a specific album from my gallery?
Yes — as long as it's a real folder on your phone. In the app, the “Albums” filter lets you choose which folders to back up: Camera, Screenshots, Downloads, WhatsApp, and so on. However, albums created inside Google Photos don't appear: these are groupings that exist only within the Google Photos app (often in the cloud), not actual folders on the phone — and Android doesn't let any backup app access them. To back up those photos, select the folder where they're actually stored (usually “Camera”), or move them into a folder of your choice using a file manager: that folder will then show up in PixiSafe.
If my photos are compressed on my iPhone, do I still get them in HD?
Yes. The iOS “Optimise iPhone Storage” option leaves a lightweight version on the phone and keeps the original in iCloud. PixiSafe retrieves that original in full quality and copies it as-is to the key — so you get the HD version, not the compressed one. And unlike software that goes through a computer, PixiSafe never asks for your iCloud account or password: everything happens from your iPhone. (Just keep Wi-Fi on so the originals can download.)

Privacy / how it works

Is my data sent over the internet?
No. Your files stay only on your key, with no cloud and no account to create.
Do I need a subscription?
No. No subscription and no monthly fees.
Does the key have a password?
No, on purpose: PixiSafe is a standard USB key, with no encryption and no password. Your files therefore stay readable on any computer, even in 10 years, without depending on software or an account. You decide where to keep it — like a photo album.
Are photos stored in iCloud or Google Photos backed up?
  • iCloud (“Optimise iPhone Storage”): yes, automatically. Even if your iPhone only keeps a lightweight version, PixiSafe fetches the full-quality original from iCloud during the backup — without ever asking for your iCloud password. Just keep Wi-Fi on while the originals download.
  • Google Photos: bring them back first. PixiSafe backs up what's in your iPhone's Photos app. Photos kept only in Google Photos (removed from the phone) must first be re-downloaded in original quality into the Photos app, then start the backup to the key.

Managing your photos and your key

What happens when my key is full?
On iPhone, the app remembers all your PixiSafe keys and knows what each one holds. When the first is full, plug in a second: it picks up exactly where the other stopped, without recopying a single one of the photos and videos already backed up. Your memories spread across several keys, with no duplicates and no bookkeeping on your side. Would you rather have a safety duplicate than a continuation? When you plug in a new key, the app lets you choose: fill in what's missing, or copy everything onto that new key. On Android, the app works with one key at a time.
Should I keep another copy of my photos and videos?
It's strongly recommended. For maximum safety, always keep your memories in at least two places: once your photos and videos are on the PixiSafe key, also copy the contents to your PC or Mac from time to time (the files are directly readable, no software needed). You'll then have a duplicate of your memories, kept in two different places.

Troubleshooting

My USB key is no longer detected on Android after formatting on Mac or PC — what should I do?
Don't worry: your key isn't broken. By erasing it, the computer reorganised it in a way Android phones don't understand — hence the “Problem with: USB drive…” notification. You just need to reformat it correctly: the easiest way is to plug the key into your Android phone and let it do it. Note: this reformatting also erases the PixiSafe licence file on the key — contact support to recover it if needed.See the detailed step-by-step procedure (phone, Mac, PC) →
On PC, Windows offers to scan/repair the key or reports errors. Is it serious?
No. Your files are intact and the key isn't faulty. It's a common Windows message with keys designed to also work on phones: as a precaution, Windows offers to check the key. You can let Windows scan and repair safely — no photo or video is deleted — or simply close the message: your files stay readable.Learn more: why Windows shows this message →
